I interviewed lawyer Alex Hortis, for the ABA Journal website, on his new book: The Witch of New York – The Trials of Polly Bodine and the Cursed Birth of Tabloid Justice.
Hortis says that the public’s fascination and media’s coverage of “true crime” can be traced to a double-murder committed in Staten Island in 1843 and the subsequent salacious trials. Despite being nearly 200 years old, the case has remarkable similarities to today concerning the media’s coverage of criminal proceedings and the public’s intense interest in them.
If you are a true crime fan, you will love this book. True crime is a topic that has been beat to death. But Hortis takes a very unique approach to it.
